Friday NightSitting before the stage that has hosted so many great Co-op-nurtured heavy guitar bands my cousin whispered to me ; “ Zere is a time to shun rock and zere is a time not to rock. Zis is not one of them”. And with that, a magical evening began. I Don’t Wanna played a lovely dark pop with hefty instrumentals grafted on. Garbage and The Cardigans are two names that the band might conjure with, if they like them. The bassist played a mean five-string. Strings 1 and 5 were his favourites. The singer was as pretty as a gorgeous cloud…….Mmmm… Kaolin’s ice-cool stage demeanour sucked me in immediately. I stood on a stool to cheer them on, and almost got sucked off !The smoky guitar growl was nicely understated and one drum fill in particular twisted my guy-dugs. Right off! Menacing sounds. Forenzic’s appearance lightened things a touch, but the volume and energy remained high. To this record producer’s ears, these were the most commercial-sounding of the rock-nite. Do it, and tell them the Music Co-op sent you! One-o-One (nee Bluaarghy) proved to the little ones that ballads can rock too. Cool, stripped-down post-Gunge that nearly emptied out my clipper. The singer was as cute as a little coconut mushroom……Mmmm.. Who earned the distinction of the evening’s loudest band? Both my right and left ear agreed on Hartlepool swashbucklers Madflower, who enjoyed the Yorkie festival feeling to kick off a national tour. Hope they return to us soon. Just as Seraphim were getting ready,I heard Carole King whine to Gerry Goffin “ You know, shouldn’t it really be “Heart of Oblivion” or “Depths of Oblivion”?” But I wasn’t about to get bogged down in semantics. It’s not that I’m racist- I just wanted to boogie! So, a great night. Up the Co-op! Down with indie wusses! But, who did YOU think was the loudest band, bargain hunters? To the messageboard! DNWH |
